Like believers today, members of the Colossian church faced the danger of mixing the Christian faith with human philosophy, religious legalism, and mystical spirituality. They believed add-ons were necessary for following Jesus.
Paul responded by presenting Christ in His fullness. Christ is supreme, sufficient, and central to salvation, freedom, and daily living.
